Make Sure You Parent Your Own Children
by Alyssa Johnson
As a step family coach, I see the following happen frequently:
A new couple marries, and suddenly the new step parent feels like their job is to "parent" their new step kids. Both parents, parenting, makes sense in a nuclear family (mom, dad and their kids), but it backfires in a step family.
You must realize that even though you are married you are a new person in your step child life's and it takes time to build up a parenting relationship.
Each parent, needs to still be responsible for parenting their own children. There are a lot of ways that the step parent can be involved, but the nitty gritty of the parenting needs to be done by the kids' biological parent.
I wish all of you the best of success!
